WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CAREERS GUIDANCE INTERVIEW

A Careers Guidance interview is an opportunity to have an informal and confidential* discussion with a qualified Careers Adviser.  It can last up to 1 hour and involve an in-depth discussion about your ideas, skills, experiences and priorities.  The aim of the interview will be to help you focus and move your career ideas forward.

You will decide what you would like to talk about and will have the opportunity to determine the direction of the interview, however it is important to be aware of what you can and cannot expect from the guidance interview;

A Careers Adviser CAN:

  • Help you reflect on your experiences and how these may relate to occupational choices.
  • Assist you in developing actions relating to your priorities and career goals.
  • Signpost useful resources and sources of information to help inform you decisions.

A Careers Adviser CANNOT:

  • Make decisions on your behalf.
  • Tell you what to do.
  • Write your CV, Application Form or Personal Statement.
  • Give legal advice e.g. advice on whether you are eligible for a work permit.

During the interview the Careers Adviser may make notes.  These notes will be used to produce a ‘Summary of Guidance’ which you will be given to take away with you.  As part of this summary it is likely there will be some agreed action points.  We will also keep a copy of these notes and in line with the Data Protection Act 1998 you may ask to see any notes we keep on you.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CAREERS GUIDANCE INTERVIEW

To make the most of your interview we suggest that you consider the following:

  • Why do you want the interview? What do you hope to get out of it?
  • Your current situation.  Note down some of the key issues relevant to you.
  • Review your PDP (or other reflective log) to reflect on your experiences. This may help you think about what you want to discuss and your objectives from the meeting
  • If relevant, bring a copy of CV or application form if you want to discuss or review them.
  • Take a look around the Careers web pages www.glyndwr.ac.uk/careers to see if there is some relevant information related to what you want to discuss at the interview.
  • Visit the Careers Centre’s information library.  We can give you a tour of the free resources which can help you prepare.
  • If you have no idea it may be useful to use Prospects Planner to help generate some ideas.  This is a computer-based programme which helps you think about the skills and abilities you have and career areas which may suit you. See Prospects Planner (you will need to register on the site before you can access the Prospects Planner facility). If you need some help with this, we will be happy to help you through it

*The guidance process should be confidential, and this should be made clear to the individual. Personal information should not be passed on without the individual's prior permission. Any limitations on this should be made absolutely clear at the earliest possible stage .The limitations on this are:

 a) that, within the Careers Service, information is shared on a need to know basis. The need to know may be concerned with the needs of the individual or with the need to maintain and develop an effective service, including the development of staff;

(b) that the Service reserves the right, in exceptional circumstances, to pass personal information without an individual's prior consent where there is a legal or 'duty of care' imperative. Even in these circumstances we would normally seek to explain this to the individual

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT HAVING CAREERS GUIDANCE

Neil Clutton graduated in 2008 with a BSc (Hon) in Building Maintenance Management.  He tells us;

"I have been employed by Powys County Council as a Property Manager since leaving University .  I sought guidance and advice from the Careers Advisers who, even though I only attended one interview provided me with practical guidance which helped me remedy a poor CV.  In my view this helped me get the interview for the post I was first employed to do, I have since been promoted to a Principle Officer management role."
