Careers Centre Statement of Service

Introduction

This statement aims to outline the services offered by the Careers Centre, also including the services of the Jobshop.  We are committed to providing services that are impartial, confidential and transparent, and meet the needs of individual clients.  We will provide our materials in alternative formats on request.

The Careers Centre operates under Glyndŵr University’s Equal Opportunities Policy, and is committed to the values of the Equal Opportunities Policy and Code of Practice issued by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS). We also operate within the QAA Code of Practice and we are accredited to Matrix Standard, the quality framework for the effective delivery of information, advice and guidance on learning or work.

The Careers Centre at Glyndŵr University exists to:

  • Provide careers education, information and guidance to all Glyndŵr University students and graduates, and to non-Glyndŵr University graduates in the region* (*For more details, please see our Usage Policy) 
  • Contribute to the development of employability skills within the curriculum, and help students and graduates gain worthwhile employment opportunities
  • Shape institutional policy and practice regarding careers education, information and guidance
  • Encourage employers to recognise the contribution of students and graduates to the regional economy

Careers Advice and Guidance

Our Careers Advisers offer impartial one-to-one interviews for careers advice and guidance with complete confidentiality.  You can book an appointment to discuss your future career, a forthcoming interview, your CV or any other careers related topic of your choice.  Please refer to our guidelines 'What to Expect From a Guidance Interview' http://www.glyndwr.ac.uk/Studentsupportservices/en/Careers/CareersAdviceandInformation/ for more details. We offer:

  • Booked Appointments – 1 hour appointments booked in advance9 am - 4pm (last appointment time) Monday to Thursday 9am – 3.30pm (last appointment time) Friday
  • Drop-in Clinic (for CV checking, information and advice) - held in the Jobshop 2pm-4pm Monday and Tuesday 10am-1pm. Please check with staff as times may vary.
  • E-Guidance – available via email careerscentre@glyndwr.ac.uk . All enquiries answered in 3 working days.

Careers Information

  • A wide range of information is provided on career options, employers, further study, labour market information, opportunities overseas, business start up support and information targeted at the needs of particular groups of students and graduates.
  • Information is reviewed bi-annually and out-of-date literature is removed
  • We endeavour to obtain material that satisfies similar requests in the future, where resources permit
  • We offer information about employers, organise recruitment events with external agencies and employers
  • We have computers with Internet access to help you in your search for employment
  • We also recommend that you register with our Jobshop www.jobshop.glyndwr.ac.uk and the GO Wales Work Placement and Work Taster programme at www.gowales.co.uk

Employment and Opportunity Preparation Sessions

Throughout the year, we offer a range of sessions to help you develop employment skills, apply for jobs, find work placement opportunities, or start your own business.  A full list of current activities is available in the Careers Centre and at www.glyndwr.ac.uk/careers

Work Placement Opportunities

The GO Wales Work Placement Scheme offers a 10 week full time or 370 hour part time placement (project or work trial) with a small to medium sized company, providing excellent work experience.  The student / graduate will receive £240 per week (pro rata if part time).

Work Tasters and Work Experience

You tell us what you want and we will endeavour to find it for you. We work with organisations that offer quality training and volunteer opportunities.

Jobshop

The Jobshop, based in the Students’ Guild, is Job Centre style, student-focussed and not commercially driven, providing:

  • A one-stop facility to provide part-time, temporary and vacation employment opportunities for students; and relevant graduate opportunities for final year students and graduates.
  • Registration online 24 hours at www.jobshopnet.glyndwr.ac.uk  
  • Advice and support for students on employment matters including NI, Tax, Minimum wage, employee rights, working in the UK (for International and EU Students) 
  • Free vacancy advertising service to local, national and international employers

Referral Procedure

While you are a customer at the Careers Centre, if we are unable to meet your information request, or do not feel able to offer the expertise that you require, we will refer you to another agency, which we think will be better able to help.  Please see our Usage Policy for more details. We would appreciate any feedback you can give us about external agencies to which we refer you.

How you can help us to improve the service

We are constantly trying to improve the quality and relevance of our services and facilities, and would appreciate any feedback that you can give us.  Customer feedback forms are available in the Careers Centre, and the individual activities are evaluated as they occur, e.g. workshops, guidance interviews.  We use all feedback to monitor our service, and act on your suggestions for planning the future delivery of services.

Complaints

If for any reason you are not satisfied with the service or treatment that you have received, please inform us.  We will investigate the issue and respond as quickly as possible. We work within the Glyndŵr University Student Complaints Procedure and more details can be found at  http://www.glyndwr.ac.uk/Studentsupportservices/en/Registry/ or please ask a member of staff.

There is a suggestion box located in the Careers Centre that you can use to post any compliments, complaints or suggestions about the service. What we expect from you

In return for the services that we offer, we would ask that you:

  • Treat staff with the same respect and courtesy you would expect to receive.
  • Let us know in good time if you are unable to attend an appointment that you have booked - we can then make that place available to another customer.
  • Complete the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education questionnaire which we send to you after graduation so that we have useful information about the employment for our graduates and can plan future services.
  • Let us know if you cannot find what you are looking for, do not think we have enough information about a particular area, discover that information is missing from our files or have any other suggestion about the service that we offer.
  • Complete evaluation forms that we distribute following your use of our services so that we can best meet your future needs and those of our other customers.
