Student comments

Read what our students say they like about the BA (Hons) Criminal Justice programme at NEWI:

‘The fact that it's half online and half taught, it makes it more varied. I also like how supportive the staff are, as I find that very important to know that i can go to them if I have a problem without feeling like I’m interrupting them cos they're too busy to see me.’

‘The fact that it is extremely diverse and leads to several opportunities within the criminal justice sector.’

‘The subjects covered frequently come up in the media so there are plenty of issues to discuss, it is a very popular course and there are opportunities to go to court and prison.  The lecturers are extremely supportive and one of the many pluses is that a lot of the information is online so you can study at any time.  Another benefit to the course is that the lecturers have worked in the Criminal Justice field and continue to write articles etc so the students get a good idea of what the jobs involve and get to hear some interesting stories.’  Jen

‘My time studying at NEWI has been an enjoyable experience, greatly due to the enthusiasm and encouragement from all the staff on the course.’ Debbie

‘Support from lecturers is excellent, module material is accessible and interesting and relevant to work within the cjs.’

‘My opinions of the criminal justice course are exemplary. Basically I have learned so much from the course this year. This is because of the support the lecturers and fellow students have given. The rapport between staff and students is great, and the rapport between students is also great.  This course would come highly recommended if I was to advise anyone about.’ Gareth

‘Year 1 has been brill!!!’ Cara

‘It’s interesting, all the variety of topics you get to cover. A very good course!’ Debra

‘As well as being relevant to many jobs within the criminal justice sector, it's also a very interesting course and therefore enjoyable. I also like the module discussions on Blackboard, essential for those who don't often speak up in lectures.’

‘I never thought that I’d have such an insight into offending & the theories behind offending. I find the subjects covered really interesting and exciting.’  Denise

‘There's lots of interesting parts to this degree. The social psychology is the most interesting aspect together with the drug and alcohol module you study in semester two... You get lots of support from all staff and they are all very friendly people too.’ Bethan

‘As it is 50% face to face and 50% online it means I can also work while studying.’

‘The course is excellent in the way that it covers a varied and interesting range of topics. The system of online and face to face lectures works well. I've learnt so many new things and it has all been set out in a way that is easy to take in. Finally, because of this varied learning there are so many possible job routes a person could take. I'd definitely recommend anyone to take up this course who has an interest in the criminal justice system.’ Sam

‘Very interesting - makes you question a lot of things, you think about things you wouldn’t normally.’

‘This course so far has been very interesting, some good modules.’ Sharon

‘As for one of the older members and someone who has been out of education for a number of years I feel that the course has helped me build in confidence... I have found that Bb - online learning - easy to learn with excellent help from lectures... I have been able to continue working part time (18hr up wk)  as well as keep up to date with all work online and face 2 face.’

‘It is a very interesting course but you do have to be disciplined and committed to your work. Having a personal tutor I know has helped me. I would highly recommend this course to anyone. I can genuinely say that there is not one module that I dislike.’

‘It does surprise me how much the lecturers are dedicated to their work and their students; this is illustrated with the amount of feedback, time and times of the day/night and how quickly they respond to queries or email. A course highly recommended for all ages.’ Sian

‘I like the subjects, I find these very interesting and you can relate them to your own life experiences.’

‘Because the course is 50% face to face and 50% online it is ideal for people who have to travel from other areas (as I do). Also, to fit in the online work around part-time work means I can continue to support myself financially. I also like the fact that the lecturers are from a working (probation) background rather than purely academic who have never stepped outside a classroom.’ Sally

‘The diversity of the course material and the ability to study online.’
