Why choose Fine Art?

In choosing to study Fine Art at the North Wales School of Art and Design you will be given the chance to explore an extensive range of challenging techniques and approaches which enable you to reach your creative potential. You will be taught and inspired by practicing artists and gain lots of hands on practical experience.

Activities covered in the degree include drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, glass, installation, video and digital media. The course allows you to choose a specialist area of practice or to maintain a broad coverage of a number of areas of Fine Art through studying a combination of activities. You will examine how artists process ideas through a combination of production and critical evaluation while learning to relate your experiences to those of other artists.

The degree places strong emphasis on drawing, critical studies and the expression of personal ideas through the effective use of materials and processes. The course will develop your communication, organisational, presentational and problem solving skills through the experience of being fully engaged at all stages of the creative process.

Special features

  • Estelle Thompson our Visiting Professor of Fine Art is a contemporary painter of international standing and there are opportunities to gain knowledge from her and other high profile visiting artists.
  • The interdisciplinary ethos of the School also enables students to learn about processes, methodologies and ideas used in other art and design disciplines and apply them within a fine art context.
  • Glyndŵr University has its own contemporary Art Gallery.
  • Project spaces available within Fine Art allow students to test out ideas and learn through a process of installing, re-installing and reconfiguring the work.
  • There is high quality studio space set within a traditional Art School environment.
  • Small group sizes allow for individual support. The tutors are enthusiastic about their subject and produce and exhibit their own work both nationally and internationally as well as involving students in this process through demonstrations and discussion.

Course content

You will develop the ability to adapt creative solutions to new situations, solve problems and manage your time effectively. You will learn to make effective use of a range of techniques and technologies, work with others and develop an awareness of how to communicate with your audience. You will gain experience of the professional working environment through our highly regarded professional development and practice modules. As you become more experienced in techniques, the use of a variety of materials and creative concepts you will be able to take your work in your own individual direction.

BA (Hons) Fine Art modules

Assessment

Assessment is continuous and relates to all aspects of the course. Formative assessments take place at the end of assignments and modules. Your work will be reviewed within a supportive working environment and feedback given at regular intervals enabling you to learn from the assessment process prior to the conclusion of a module.

Entry requirements

The academic requirements for the course are 200 UCAS points. You will also be expected to produce a portfolio of artwork demonstrating your interests and abilities. See information on general entry requirements.
